Peugeot 408 (2023): Seat mounting and all information about the 308 crossover

Peugeot expands its model range by 408. The new series is based on the compact 308 and is not explicitly intended to be an SUV coupe – despite the lift, the unpainted plastic wheel arches and the flowing roofline. Instead, the French want the 408 to be understood as a newly conceived sedan – that is, as a crossover.

The 408 will roll off the assembly line in Mulhouse, France, at the end of 2022 and will be on sale in January 2023. It will initially be available as a petrol engine and in two plug-in hybrid variants, with a purely electric version to follow later. . Prices for the 408 have not yet been set, but they will start at around 35,000 euros. (Overview: all new cars 2022)

408 runs between 308 and 3008/508

The new 408 is based on the EMP2 platform, just like the compact 308 and the SUV 3008. With its 4.69 meters, however, it is significantly longer than its two siblings (308: 4.36) m / 3008: 4.45 m).
Still, the Peugeot 408 sorts in the model range between 308 and 3008 or 508. The name also makes it clear: numerically between compact and then and without central double zero – which is reserved for SUVs at Peugeot.

The rear of the 408, with its two roof mounts and the powerful, unpainted bumper, looks extremely bulky.

The 408 is aimed at people who want to drive a stylish car with an extra shot of versatility, but who still do not want to own an SUV or a classic sedan. To make things even more complex, Peugeot is already selling a compact sedan called the 408 in China, so the new crossover will be called the 408 X there.

Length: 4.69m
Width: 1.85m
Height: 1.48m
Wheelbase: 2.79m
Ground clearance: 19 cm
Luggage volume: 536-1611 l (PHEV: 471-1546 l)

Optically many bonds from 308

The 408 is deliberately dynamic, which is mainly due to the enormously long greenhouse and the beefy rear with a large spoiler lip. Unpainted plastic on wheel arches, sills and parts of aprons as well as the increased ground clearance of 19 centimeters ensures a shot of robustness in appearance. However, the relationship to the 308 is always clear.

The front of the 408 is also characterized by flat LED headlights (optional matrix LED) with the typical Peugeot catch daylights. The new Peugeot logo is decorated in the middle, behind which the sensors for the driving assistants are hidden.

The 20-inch rims are extra and really eye-catching. But there are also more subtle patterns in 17 to 19 inches.

With the best equipment line “GTThe radiator grille inserts are painted in the vehicle color, the aprons have a sportier design. The equipment “Allure” and “Allure Pack” have more restrained aprons and a differently designed grille with a chrome look.

The extremely eye-catching 20-inch rims, which are available as options for the plug-in hybrid models, have nothing to do with restraint. Depending on the equipment, more conventional 17 or 19-inch wheels are standard.

Cockpit with good standard equipment

The cockpit takes over the 408 one to one from the 308 – or rather the opposite. According to Peugeot, the cockpit architecture was actually developed for the crossover and only then decided to use it for the 308, which debuted earlier.

The only difference is the higher seating position. In addition, there is a standard 10-inch digital cockpit and Peugeot’s new infotainment generation with a 10-inch display and another screen directly below for freely allocable menu paths. The quality impression was very good when we tried the seat for the first time, even though it was still a pre-series model.

When it comes to equipment lines, it starts with “Allure”. These include partial leather seats, two-zone automatic air conditioning, parking assistance with 180-degree camera, LED headlights and infotainment with standard navigation. Above that are “Allure Pack” and “GT”. The former basic equipment “Active“Peugeot has removed all model series from the program due to lack of demand. (Connection check in new Peugeot 308)

Rear with a little ceiling height and plenty of legroom

There is ambivalence when it comes to the space behind. On the one hand, there is a lack of ceiling height. Due to the sloping roof, it becomes narrow above the crown from a height of 1.80 m. The feeling of space also suffers from the narrow windows and the small rear window. However, thanks to the long wheelbase, the legroom is more than princely, even for tall people.

Unfortunately, the seating position for adults is suboptimal, as there is not enough leg support due to the flat and too short seat. A circumstance that the 408 inherits from the 308. Still, anything less than a two-hour drive should not be a problem, not even for adults behind.

Surprisingly much space in the trunk

There is nothing to complain about given the incredibly deep trunk. With a load volume of 536 to 1611 liters (65 liters less in each case with the plug-in hybrids), the 408 beats even the 3008. Of course, the load height is limited by the sloping roof line and the load board is a little higher. But this also applies to the competitors in this class – so nothing that you can specifically chalk up to the 408.

The luggage compartment is deep and swallows up to 536 l of luggage with the seats folded up. Something limiting: the flat rear window.

Petrol and plug-in hybrids at market launch

The range of the driveline is the same as for the 308, but has been slightly reduced for the 408. Neither the 110 hp petrol engine nor the diesel is available for the crossover. It starts instead with the 130 hp three-cylinder petrol engine. Above are two charging hybrids with 180 and 225 hp system power and each about 60 kilometers of electric range.

The front of the 408 is a mix of the 308 and 3008 facelifts. The grill on the GT is lacquered, otherwise in chrome look.

An eight-speed automatic is always on board. All engines also drive the front wheels. There is no four-wheel drive – we remember, the 408 should not be an SUV. A mild hybrid and a fully electric version follow later. The hybrid replaces the petrol engine, the electric car can be the basis for the new Opel Manta crossover in the Stellantis Group. Market launch in January 2023

According to Peugeot, the market launch for the 408 is in January 2023. What the car will cost has not yet been announced. If you count on a comparably equipped 308 but with a little crossover bonus in addition to that, then the 408 should start at around 35,000 euros. It would be much more expensive than the Renault Arkana, but it would also offer more space. (This is how it works to buy a new car on the Internet!)
