Mannheim improves traffic test – SWR Aktuell

Mannheim wants to get through traffic from the city center with barriers and signs. Many companies criticize this traffic attempt. The city wants to fix it.

The traffic test in Mannheim has been going on since March. For this purpose, Fressgasse and Kunststraße were partially blocked with barriers. The transit traffic with cars and motorcycles out of the city center and the quality of stay should be improved. The whole thing should be reviewed after one year. But there is criticism.

The city wants to get better

According to IHK and the trade association, it was not possible to prevent passage through the barrier. Rather, secret roads would be used. Mayor Ralf Eisenhauer (SPD) is responsible for the traffic and expressed his concern about the behavior of many motorists in a written statement from the city.

“We were amazed at the force with which clear signage and traffic rules are intentionally and deliberately ignored in the city center.”

Cars and motorcycles are temporarily forbidden to pass. The trail is still free for cyclists.

According to Eisenhauer, the city takes the suggestions and fears of retailers, locals and politicians seriously. Among other things, tightening measures are being prepared with a barrier system. However, there are delivery problems. Instead, mobile construction site equipment should provide a short-term cure.

Signage should be improved

In addition, the barrier in Fressgasse will be permanently closed from the end of June. Previously, the access to the new pedestrian zone in P1 / Q1 and E1 / F1 was opened for delivery traffic in the morning. However, this was also used by drivers who were not authorized to do so.

Companies require cancellation or an earlier decision

Only a third of the surveyed businessmen in Mannheim want a decision on the traffic test in the city center and its continuation to be made at the beginning of 2023. Many entrepreneurs want a decision before the summer break in the City Council. Some even hope that the traffic test will be stopped completely.

“After two years of the pandemic, the inner-city economy needs good Christmas business. Therefore, companies rightly demand clarity in how the traffic test will continue.”

According to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, there will only be a continuation if the goals are achieved.

The goal of getting through traffic from the city center is correct, according to IHK’s chairman Schnabel. However, the implementation of the traffic test failed. This does not solve the transit problem, but only moves the traffic to the inner city ring road. This puts additional strain on traffic in the city.

Companies want to be available

The stores are also dependent on individual transports of customers, suppliers and employees. More than half of the respondents also stated that the experiment did not increase the quality of the stay in the city center.
